Shards of A Suspended Desire - 2024
On a volcanic island off the Mediterranean coast, I waver.
This project emerged from a rupture: that of a 49-year-old woman in the midst of an inner migration, navigating the unstable terrain of perimenopause. Still fertile, never fecund. Between pain, dizziness, and sudden flashes of clarity, a threshold is crossed—symbolic, intimate, physical.
In this open fault line, my gaze rests on young women. Time passes over me; I suspend it upon them.
I reflect on my age, on what I’ve built, what escaped me. What lies ahead, and what I will never live. Through them, I brush against a youth that is free, unbound, imagined. A natural intimacy unfolds, with no hierarchy or assigned role. This fluid connection carves out a space of mutual surrender. Their bare presence becomes living matter, vibrant, porous, attuned to the world. I do not freeze them; I slip into their motion.
The island, both memory and matrix, a territory in constant mutation, mirrors our forms, our fragilities, our braided strengths. Between introspection and observation, I explore desire, solitude, sexuality, and the contradictions of a body in transformation. I face the absence of motherhood, the constant redrawing of femininity. I revisit my roots, and the visceral tie to a Latin land I left too soon, though never entirely.
This work sketches a shared place where female bodies exist beyond definition. It questions how women inhabit themselves, connect, and rebuild. It honors strength found in vulnerability.
Between ritual and memory, this visual narrative seeks to mend a dispersed identity.
I weave together threads of reality and fantasy to ask one simple question: What endures when everything falls apart?
